How do I set up Two-Factor Authentication?

Two-factor authentication adds an additional layer of security to your App.net account.  By enabling two-factor authentication on your account you are requiring that an extra code, which can only be generated by an app on your mobile device, be entered to log in. That way, if anyone gets a hold of your password and tries to log-in with it, they would also need to have your mobile device or the backup codes that we give you.
 

To set up two-factor authentication on your App.net account you must first be sure that your email address has been confirmed and you verify your mobile phone number. Once you have confirmed your email address and verified you phone number, log into Alpha and click on your username in the upper right corner:

Go to Settings -> 



Security -> Two Factor Authentication 




Enter your current password and click the 'Enable Two-Factor Authentication' button.  

You will then be directed to a page with a QR code that you must scan with a one-time password (OTP) app like Google Authenticator using your smart phone and then enter the 6-digit OTP code it generates in the box below the QR code.  Click the 'Confirm OTP Code' button to continue.



When the code is confirmed, you will see the page below which will explain how two-factor authentication will work for your account.  Note: the OTP code that is generated in the OTP app is time-sensitive. You will be required to retrieve a new code from your OTP app each time you log into Alpha.

You will also be given 10 backup codes to use in case you are unable access your smart phone for the OTP code.  Save these codes in a safe place.

If you plan on changing your mobile device please note that the OTP app you use will not save your OTP code.  You will either need to disable Two Factor Authentication before changing your device or use a backup code to log back in.



You may also want to consider implementing application-specific passwords on new apps that you use to increase your account security.
